What’s up with the name?

A technopoly is a society in which technology exerts the dominant force over culture and human behaviour. By many accounts, we live in different technopolies today.

Technological innovation provides some of our greatest hope for solving modern challenges — that’s no secret. This is especially salient in emerging economies, like Latin America, where innovation can catapult societies into a future of economic and humanitarian prosperity. Think of what digital banking, crypto, and agtech can do for the unbanked, the hyperinflated, and the drought-depleted.

But, as Neil Postman wrote back in the nineties, this innovation comes with real human risks. We shape our tools, and our tools shape us in turn — so what future are we really building? Who wins, and how are our tools building us?

This newsletter chronicles my explorations of tech, venture capital, and startups and Latin America. My goal is to provide you with a rigorous perspective that balances skepticism and optimism — to be tech-focused, but not tech-obsessed. It’s an experiment in learning in public, and I’m glad you’re here for the ride.
